Search for the Medusa

Wednesday, May 1, 2019

In 1980 a French marine archaeological expedition sailed to the still-uncharted waters of the Arguin Bank, located the 1816 sunken wreck of La Medusa and recovered artifacts for museum display. Charles Mazel, PhD, was the expedition’s Technical Director. In the “Search for the Medusa,” Dr. Mazel will recount the events of the shipwreck, including its causes and aftermath; how French romantic artist Theodore Géricault came to paint his masterpiece The Raft of the Medusa; and the adventure and technology used in the expedition to locate the Medusa’s remains. Charles Mazel holds a Master’s in Ocean Engineering from MIT and earned his PhD in Marine Biology at Boston University. Presented by GPL and Carlisle COA.
