Cuba and the Baseball Season: Jose Ramirez author talk
Thursday, May 9, 2019
Westford author Jose Ramirez will present a free talk on his new book,
In this book, Mr. Ramirez writes about the lesser-known story of baseball players in Cuba and the US Minor Leagues who learned of their inability to pursue their dreams to play professional baseball in their home country following the Castro regime's decision to abolish professional baseball. Players were faced with the dilemma to either leave behind their family, home, friends, and beloved homeland, in order to play baseball professionally, or to stay at home and pursue a different and uncertain way of life.
This is not simply another baseball story; it is about the personal struggle these men and their families endured, and the heart-wrenching judgment they had to make.
The author came to the U.S. from Cuba as part of what is known today as Operation Pedro Pan on January 21, 1961, arriving just prior to the end of professional baseball in Cuba.
